The Federal Glass Company made this platter in the 1940s. The Federal Glass Co. first opened their doors in 1900 in Columbus, Ohio. The company’s specialties were in handmade press glass. This Pattern was the last major pattern made by Federal Glass Co. which was called Pioneer Intaglio or Pioneer. The pioneer pattern is a rugged looking with solid, rather thick, ruffled sides around an octagonal center section. Often the center design was a intaglio fruit design. Intaglio is a term for a design that is deeply recessed by cutting or sandblasting and in this case intaglio design is done by pressing the glass which gave the elements of much older pressed pattern glass. It is a type of reverse embossing and is often confused with regular embossing. Federal called this crystal glass in this case crystal refers to clear glass not lead crystal or cut crystal. Pressed glass is sometimes referred to as sandwich glass. It is in mint condition with no cracks, chips, necks, repairs, fleabites, or stains. In addition, it shows no signs of wear at all
