Mr. Pope  and Mr. Gosser establish the Pope-Gosser China Company in 1903 and started producing high grade translucent china vases. However, the company did not finding a profit in this line. Then company switched over to semi-porcelain dinnerware which was harder than the usual dinnerware of the times. Pope-Gosser China Co. made two noteworthy dinnerware shapes which were the Louvre and the Edgemore. however this plater is not one of these shapes. The company continued to make semi-porcelain dinnerware’s until 1958. But the quality of later dinnerwares (about the 1930s on) was not up to the old standards. The Pope-Gosser China Co. used the ‘Pope-Gosser China’ hallmark in both capital and small letters until about 1908, at this time they adopted the Unicorn to the hallmark. In 1920, the lettering on the hallmark mark was changed to just ‘POPE-GOSSER CHINA’ in all capital letters and the Unicorn was dropped from the hallmark. The hallmark on this plater is greenish in color and the words “POPE-GOSSER” forming an arc over the word “CHINA”. The Pope-Gosser China Co. began including “Made in U.S.A.” in the late 1920’s to about 1931. A pattern code would be below the hallmark and as part of the hallmark however, this plater done not have a pattern code on it. The hallmark is under the final glazing. In researching this plater there was no information about the plater along with no other plater like it on the antique market for sale. It has a scallop rim with a gold trim design around the plater just below the rim and the rim edge had gold on it. But some of the gold trim has worn off the rim edge only. The plater’s age was determined by the hallmark that was used from 1920 to the late 1920s before “Made in U.S.A.” was add to the hallmark. This plater has two small chip on the underside at the rim. Other than that, it is in excellent condition for its age with no cracks, necks, scratches, repairs, fleabites, stains, or wears-marks.
