An Eskimos in Alaskan U.S.A. in or before the 1940s made this ivory necklace. It was given to grandfather as a gift for his services when he worked in Alaskan in the 1940s before I was born. Native Eskimos are the only people that are loud to kill Walrus for food, clothing, and to make Ivory carvings. In addition, to this day Eskimo are still the only people that are allowed to kill walrus for food, clothing, and to make ivory carvings and the only people that can sale their ivory carvings to the rest of the world. (First time buyer, can resale the Ivory caving as many times as they want.) That being said, this is a Walrus Ivory necklace that has been worn a lot to the point that the chain has left a dark line on the backside of the two crosscut Ivory tusks. The center peace of the necklace is sold Ivory, the back color on the center ivory peace only occurs on Walrus Ivory, if it has lied on the beach for a long time being exposed to sunlight and saltwater. This Ivory came from the tusk of a died and long gone Walrus and not from a Walrus that was just killed. This type of old ivory is harder to find which, means that it could be older than 79 years (min.) for it to change color and be made into a necklace. This is a true old ivory necklace artifact. It does have what looks like one repair on one part using old scotched tape that has turned yellow. I believe my grandmother may have done the repair. Determining the condition of this true artifact like this necklace cannot be done in this case for the main reason this is a true artifact, which was found lying on the beach for a long time before it was found. True artifacts do not have a condition rating for the main reason there is nothing to compare them with or a rate scale like old coins. This is a one of a kind and could be priceless. I put a price it because I want to sale it. The buyer maybe getting a deals of a lift time. I personally do not know that for sure.
- Chain length is: 9”
- Total necklace length is: 10.75”
