What we have here is a vintage Japan hand painted luster Moriage Draganware cup and saucer set. It was produced in the Ishikawa Prefecture in the Hokuiku district of Honshu, on the Japanese main island. It was made in late 1940’s to the early 1950’s and it does not have a maker’s name. The Hallmark is a red Maple leaf with “Cherry China” on the inside of the Maple leaf and below that is written, “Made in Japan. This red hallmark is stamped on top of the glazed finish. The hallmark can be the name of a place, a person name, artist, potter, shop, kiln, etc. The hallmark on this cup and saucer and the words “Cherry China” in red, the reason the color of the hallmark on Chines and Japanese porcelain and china, is so important is that these two countries us color for help identification location sometimes. Because these countries do not have any set rule for hallmarks on porcelain products or records of hallmark makes it hard to identify maker, location, or kiln. Many Japanese pottery makers fire their pottery in a locale kiln. This cup and saucer set is in mint condition with no dents, cracks, chips, necks, scratches, fleabites, repairs, or stains, but does have wears-marks on the cup’s handle.
