Here is a handcrafted Banko wares vase from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. The Banko Ware pottery is a pottery art form with hundreds of years of history behind it, thriving in the port town of Yokkaichi, in Mie prefecture, Japan. Both China and Japan pottery make where independent makers of pottery wares. Most of these pottery makers did not have the own kiln but use a local community like kiln, so a lot of the makers marks where not recorded and the makers mark on this vase is no exception. What is known is about this Banko wares vase is about when it was made and where it was made. The characteristic dark, rusty color of Banko Ware is due to both the specially prepared iron-rich red clay and yellow clay blend together, and the firing process. The scene in this vase shows is two people on their knees leaning over a cradle giving it the appearance of a religious scene that copies Jesus in the Manger. (My personal opinion) It is in excellent condition with no repairs or damage that I can see.
