This is a mid-19th century Japanese porcelain salt and pepper shaker set that is marked on the bottom “Made in Japan”. Before 1921, Japanese porcelain was marked with “Nippon” and after 1921 the porcelain, was marked “Japan” or “Made in Japan” which was used up to 1980. From 1947 to 1952 Japanese export, products were marked “Occupied Japan" or "Made in Occupied Japan” and after 1952 little to no gold was use on Japanese porcelain. In addition, many of the Japanese porcelain factories were destroyed during WWII so to find the factory’s name or location is often difficult to do. After 1952, products from Japan were either marked "Japan" or "Made in Japan" again. In 1952 when U.S. occupation of japan formally ended then “Made in Japan” and “Japan” became standard hallmark on Japan’s export products. The red hallmarks indicate that this shaker set could have been manufactured in the Gifu Precture region. The set is hand painted and trimmed with a lot of gold. (In most cases ceramic, porcelain, or pottery the gold trim would be 22k gold) This early mid-century (1940s) salt and pepper shaker set has one, that is shaped like a teapot and the other is shaped like a sugar bowl. The colors are still vibrant; the teapot handle looks like some of the gold trim may have worn off. This is hard to determine because it was hand painted. The spout on the tea pot has been repaired at on time. The repair is nicely done and very hard to see. In addition, there is one little fleabite on the pout. Other than that, it is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, necks, or stains.
