This is a handcrafted Walrus from a walrus tusk that was done in the late 40s or early 50s. The skim artist would only hunt for food and the other parts of the animal would be used for clothing, shelter, and artwork. Ivory has three layers, just like human teeth, which is the outer layer (enamel), middle layer (dentine), and the inner core which is bone. A talented skim artist would exposes all three layers in a carving for making unusual patterns within the carving to make it unique from other carvings which would make that carving a one of a kind in color pattern only. This walrus carving has hairline cracks which are caused by the animal moving from sunbathing on the warm rock to the cold ocean water. These cracks are called "breathing crack". In addition, Walrus Ivory that has a brownish, black, and tan marbling coloring on the surface happens, when the tusk lies on the beach for a number of years with the sun beating down on it and the ocean water washing over the tusk for years. The three layers are on this carving but did not show up very well in the photos nor did the hairline cracks, but they are there. A  total of three cracks which does not effect the value of the carving. It is in mint condition with no cracks, chips, necks, fleabites, repairs, or stains.
